High-End Combo to Grow: A Mass-Building Twist

Q: I’m getting some wicked pumps with Pre-Ex 3X. But I’ve been reading about your high-tension-time training methods. Do you think using higher reps on the pre-ex exercises is a good idea so I get 60 to 90 seconds of tension time?

A: Interesting idea. Optimal hypertrophic tension time is said to be 40 to 60 seconds, and many researchers extend that to 90 seconds. Most bodybuilders do sets that last only around 20 seconds… [Read more…]

High-End Hypertrophy Hit: Move it for more mass

Goodin bench press

Q: Your higher-rep TORQ (tension overload repetition quantity) method is unreal. It’s given me new size in every muscle after only three weeks. I use your [3-way] Positions of Flexion, and I TORQ on one of the 3 moves. I switch it up with regular 4X and heavy pyramids. My question is, Should I add weight on each set when I use TORQ [30-20-15 reps]?

A: Mixing it up is great for ultimate mass, as we’ll explain. As for adding weight to each TORQ set, that’s going to depend on the exercise and where your TORQ move falls in the POF bodypart routine… [Read more…]

The #1 Key to Ultimate Muscle Size

Most muscular

Q: So from what I can surmise, it sounds like I need both heavy, lower-rep sets and higher-rep, longer tension-time sets to build the ultimat muscle size. Is that right?

A: That’s a simple way to put it, but yes, most trainees need both types of training to attain extreme development as quickly as possible. Let’s review the late, great Olympic coach and strength/muscle-building expert Charles Poliquin’s input…

Best Mass Moves for High-End-Hypertrophy Hits

Q: I just started using the 30-20-15 [TORQ] method on one exercise for each muscle. I do the other exercises as regular sets or 4X. The higher reps really feel incredible. What a great pump and deep fiber hit. My question is, Which exercise is best for 30-20-15—midrange, stretch or contracted?

A: As we’ve mentioned before, the angle of pull is different on each of midrange, stretch, and contracted exercises, so fiber activation can be unique as well.

Quick Mass Tip: Double Down to Blow Up BIG

You already know that some type of overload is necessary for growth-fiber thickening. That’s called myofibrillar size.

The strands in the muscle fiber enlarge, giving you bigger muscles. Heavier loads can produce that…

High-End Hypertrophy Progression: Blow Up Big Time

Q: I got the Power-Density Mass Workout 2.0 and was motivated by [Mr. America] Doug Brignole’s interview and how he uses only one exercise for each muscle. I notice he adds weight over five sets so his reps fall—but I’m with you and think 50 reps is a bit much—and boring. My question is, if I use your TORQ method [30-20-15] on two or three exercise per bodypart, should I add weight over those three sets?

A: You can—it really depends on the exercise. When we do TORQ on an isolation move, like machine flyes for chest, we do NOT add weight…

Arm Bomb to Get Your Freak On

Jonathan Lawson cable curls - Arm Bomb to Get Your Freak On

Q: I’ve been using the POF Direct/Indirect Mass Workout in the 4X 2.0 e-book. Doing great! I’m loving it and I feel much bigger already. But my arms are my weakest muscle groups, so I’m thinking about doing a second arm workout on Saturday. That would have me training five days a week instead of four. Is that okay?

A: That’s a great program—and because you’re using moderate-weight, growth-threshold training, you can tolerate more frequent work for most bodyparts; however… [Read more…]
