Mass Merger—10X Power/Rep Range/Shock

Jonathan Lawson doing incline dumbbell flyes

Q: Great timing on your recent P/RR/S newsletter! I’m using the X-Rep Power/Rep Range/Shock Workout [on pages 103-114 in the 3D Muscle Building e-book], and my size and strength are totally thriving on the variation, like nothing I’ve ever tried before. What a great concept! Now I’m reading The Ultimate 10×10 Mass Workout, and I want to put that method into the mix, using mass merger techniques. Where should I use it, Power, Rep Range or Shock week? And on which exercises?

A: First, we must give credit where credit is due: a big thumbs-up to Eric Broser for creating the Power/Rep Range/Shock protocol. We simply altered it to include full-range Positions of Flexion and X Reps. To put it in simple terms, Power week you do all low reps; Rep Range week you do one exercise in the 7-9 range, another for 10-12 and the last for 13-15; Shock week is supersets, drop sets and other intensity techniques to totally thrash the muscles. Five Pounds of New Muscle Fast

Jonathan Lawson barbell curls - 2 Tips for Unstoppable Arm Size

Q: I’ve been reading about the fascia-expansion supersets, and it makes a lot of sense. A friend of mine is using it, and he’s added five pounds of new muscle fast—in a month! He looks more ripped too, with veins everywhere. I want to try it, but I train after work at my gym, and it’s pretty crowded. I don’t think I can superset. Should I just give up on the idea of fascia expansion for now?

A: In our X-Rep Update #1 e-book we provide a solution. The key to fascia expansion and building new muscle fast is a big-pump exercise followed by a full-stretch movement. That allows you to stretch the muscle encasement, the fascia, due to elongating the muscle after it’s full of blood… [Read more…]

Loosen Up to Unleash Extreme Muscle Growth

Q: Have you heard of FST-7 training, and if so, what do you think of it? It has to do with stretching the muscle fascia from the inside with 7 sets of a big-pump exercise at the end of a bodypart workout.

A: The idea of stretching the muscle fascia, which is the fibrous encasements that surround muscle fibers, has been around a while in many incarnations. The original method had trainees use a rigorous, painful stretching regimen after they trained a bodypart.

For example, after working hamstrings, the trainee would sit on the floor, legs straight and together, and his or her trainer would force the trainee’s torso forward to fully elongate the hamstrings—and it brought tears to the eyes.

Major Muscle Expansion

Q: Your e-zines on fascia stretching are very interesting. I’ve been using your suggestion of supersetting a contracted exercise with a stretch exercise. It feels awesome, and I’m already seeing more muscle expansion, like on my inner chest. My question is, Why should I do actual full reps on the stretch move? Why not just hold in the stretch position so it’s a constant stretch on the pumped muscle?

A: We get excited and proud when bodybuilders take an idea and run with it. Congratulations. That’s an excellent variation that could make the fascia-expansion supersets even more effective—a Static X on the stretch exercise.

Muscle-Building Tips, Tricks, and Pics

Q: The X-Rep workout program I’m using from the X-Rep Update #1 e-book is amazing. I added a couple pounds of muscle after only two weeks, and I swear I’m seeing new cuts and striations I’ve never seen on me before. Do you notice more size and detail when you use the fascia-expansion techniques?

A: Standard POF protocol is the midrange exercise, followed by the stretch exercise, followed by the contracted exercise. For example, bench presses (midrange), dumbbell flyes (stretch), and cable flyes (contracted). Merely switching the order of the last two exercises provides more of a stretching effect on the muscle-fiber encasements, which allows for more growth to occur…

10X Muscle Expansion

Jonathan Lawson incline curls - 10X Muscle Expansion

Q: I just read your X-Rep Update #1 e-book and also your Ultimate 10×10 Mass Workout. I am thoroughly impressed. What great info. I learned a lot and am applying many of your methods. I was especially intrigued by the fascia-expansion workout in X Update. It makes sense to end a bodypart routine by supersetting the contracted-position exercise with a stretch one to make room for extra growth to happen; however, I can’t superset in my crowded gym. What do you think about just ending each bodypart workout with 10×10 on a stretch-position exercise to expand the fascia?

A: Man, we love it when trainees use their heads and come up with a killer idea. That’s an excellent way to use 10×10 to get major muscle expansion, one we hadn’t originally considered. It’s an ideal solution for trainees who want to continue to use heavy weight on the big exercises, but still add on 10×10 to get a BIG bang in muscle gains… [Read more…]

Sore Muscles for More Mass?

Q: I get sore muscles after almost every workout, and then I’m still sore the next time I go to the gym. Is it bad to train a muscle when it’s still sore?

A: Scientists believe that sore muscles are caused by micro-tears in the fibers. In other words, it’s damage. Training a muscle hard while it’s still sore is like scratching the scab off of a wound before it’s completely healed. It impairs the healing process and can cause damage that retards proper recovery.

Detail Your Delts

Jonathan Lawson incline lateral raise - Detail Your Delts

Q: I’m having trouble with the incline one-arm lateral raise [stretch-position delt exercise]. I tend to lose my balance when I’m on my side on the incline bench, and I can’t feel my center-delt head working. Any suggestions?

A: It does take some jostling and positioning to get set on the incline bench for incline one-arm lateral raises—but it’s worth the time to get it right since these can really help detail your delts. It was an Arnold favorite, and for good reason: It stretches the medial head as well as the posterior head, both of which add considerable roundness to your delts. [Read more…]
