Mr. America’s Controversial Muscle Book

Photo of Richard Baldwin flexing his biceps

Q: Your Old Man Young Muscle ebook is your best work by far. I’ve got most of your books and ebooks, and this one tops the list. It’s pushed my gains to new heights at 45 years old. You do a great job of distilling Doug Brignole’s information and exercises, intertwining them with your own. My question is, should I get Doug’s book? It’s pricey.

A: Doug’s book, The Physics of Resistance Exercise, is a 400-page reference you will go back to again and again. [Read more…]

This Will Blow Your Mind: 2X Muscle Growth

Steve with a belly vs. smooth and muscular vs. cut

I’ve been reporting on Doug “Mr. America & Mr. Universe” Brignole’s latest training in which he does four sets per muscle on only one ideal exercise. His reps are: 30, 20, 15, 10.

He said that his muscle growth has been spectacular by training each muscle twice a week, four sets per workout. In fact, his gains have been so stellar, he’s thinking about coming out of retirement and competing again at age 63… [Read more…]

He looked fit, then he took of his shirt—Holy Sh!#

Frank Zane in clothes vs. a physique shot holding a sword

Don’t judge a look when it’s covered. Someone can appear fairly average in clothes, especially drug-free bodybuilders—lean and fit. But when the shirt comes off, they can look 20 pounds heavier and ripped. [Read more…]

Before and After Photos—10 Pounds of New Muscle

Jonathan Lawson incline Smith machine presses with Steve Holman Spotting - What Are Stage Sets? (Hint: They Work!)

Q: Your before and after photos at the X-Rep site are impressive and, to be frank, almost unbelievable. You say that the next year after those were taken, you gained another 10 pounds of muscle. What exactly do you attribute those new gains to? They’re almost unbelievable considering you were both advanced and supposedly drug-free?

A: “Supposedely” drug-free? Thank you! We always take an anabolic-steroid accusation as a compliment. We totally understand the doubt, considering how tough it is to build muscle, especially 10 pounds of it. We often think of the late Mike Mentzer, former pro bodybuilder and high-intensity advocate, who often suggested imagining 10 pounds of ground hamburger piled on a table. That’s a lot of meat… [Read more…]

Triple-Threat Exercise for More Muscle Size

JL Pushdowns - Volumizing Muscle Tissue

Q: I’m using a Positions-of-Flexion program from 3D Muscle Building. I’ve read a lot about the pro bodybuilders’ training, and I’m just not sure three exercises per muscle, as you recommend in POF, is enough. Can you help me understand why that’s sufficient for building the most mass?

A: First, realize the all pro bodybuilders use anabolic steroids. Those drugs heighten recovery and growth significantly. That means they can tolerate a lot more volume at each workout. On top of that, the pros have genetics for building muscle and recovering from work far superior to us normal mortals… [Read more…]

A few Zens back, we mentioned that our friend and colleague Doug Brignole recently won the 2019 Drug-Free Mr. Universe Open division at age 59.

He’s not a mass monster, but rather cut from the aesthetic-physique mold. Nevertheless, even in a T-shirt, his physique is very impressive, as you can see from this flexing pic [photo courtesy of Doug Brignole]… [Read more…]
